THE RULES
OF KARATE

  • Each contestant must be either certified or registered at an established club or organization whose instructor holds at least a first-degree black belt.
  • No contestant will be allowed to compete in more than one weight division.
  • There shall be three belt classifications: white, brown, and black.
  • At the time of weighing-in, a competent medical examiner will be present and shall disqualify any contestant judged not physically fit to compete.
  • Matches in white and brown belt classifications shall be of two minutes’ duration; black-belt contests three minutes. Extension periods may be granted at the discretion of the Rules Committee.
  • Each bout will be officiated by a referee, four judges and a timekeeper.
  • A contest ends when three full points have been scored or at the expiration of the time limit. Three out of five officials must be in accord for a point to be scored.
  • A single but controlled attack, undeflected or unblocked, that lands directly on one of the vital points, shall be considered by the judges as constituting one point providing the strongly-focused attack is executed with (a) good form and balance, (b) proper distance, and (3) explosive but controlled force.
  • There can be no draws. In the event of a scoreless match the winner will be selected by a majority vote of the judges.
  • When a contestant has committed any infraction of the rules the referee shall immediately disqualify him.
  • Only recognized techniques can be used.
